Digi Yatra

Airports Authority of India (AAI) is committed to continuously modernize its airports, improve passenger serving and deliver world-class experience to travellers. Our airports have been always striving for improvement of operational efficiency across airports for terminal entry, faster security checking & boarding.

To overcome the delays and long queues at airport, a pioneering initiative has been undertaken through “DigiYatra”, a technological innovation wherein passengers will have a seamless travel experience right from airport entry point till the boarding gates.

Under the framework of “DigiYatra Foundation” a Joint Venture (a not-for-profit company) incorporated by Airports Authority of India and Private Airport Operators, Shri Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation has successfully launched Biometric Boarding System (BBS) at Varanasi Airport on 1st December 2022 along with Delhi and Bengaluru. Thereafter, the system was launched at Kolkata, Pune and Vijayawada Airports on 31st March 2023. This system provides passengers a contactless air travel experience, as each of the touch point is managed digitally to facilitate smooth and efficient passenger flow without compromising security in any manner.

To use this facility, one-time registration on DigiYatra App is required using Aadhar based validation and a self-image capture. The installed system uses Facial Recognition Technology to validate passengers’ travel credentials; Block chain Technology to enable the passengers to share their travel credentials and facial data at their will, in advance, to the departure airport; and Decentralized Identifiers (DID) to ensure privacy for passengers, by design.

Till now, more than 2 lakh passengers have travelled using Biometric Boarding System at 4 AAI airports. Waiting time for each step right from airport terminal entry till passenger boarding is reduced which garnered encouraging feedback from passengers. In order to enhance adaptability among passengers, AAI has also positioned “Digi-Buddies” to assist passengers for smooth operations along with helpdesk to handle passengers’ queries & grievances especially during initial phase of the project.

Through this digital initiative, our airports are embracing new technology and procedures which will strengthen our commitment towards AAI’s Mission of ensuring modern & safe airport operations.
