Belagavi city was earlier known as VENU GRAM from the Sanskrit word VENU GRAMA i.e BAMBOO VILLAGE. Of late, the city has carved itself a new name as “KUNDA NAGARI” because of the sweet dish “KUNDA” made with milk, sugar & spices.
It is located in the State of Karnataka on the northern part at 499.0 km (approx.) north of Bangalore and 550.0 km (approx.) from Mumbai. City is 150.0 km (approx.) away from Goa airport.
City is having the prestigious SUVARNA VIKAS SOUDHA and proposed second capital of Karnataka. It is the biggest district and fourth largest city of Karnataka State. City situated near the FOOT HILLS of SAHYADRI MOUNTAIN RANGE known as “WESTERN GHAT”.
Belagavi is an educational hub (various Medical & Engineering colleges, VTU governing all the Engineering colleges of Karnataka state is located in city).
There are many tourists’ spots in and around Belagavi which also have high influx of tourists like AIHOLE, PATTADAKAL, GOKAK falls, BADAMI, HAMPI etc.
Brief History about Belagavi Airport:
It is established by Royal Air Force in 1942. Indian Airlines commenced operations from 1947.
From the year 1989 to 2011, various private Airlines operated at Belagavi Airport.
From the year 2012 M/s. Spicejet started their operation and continued till date. Upto May-2018, M/s. Spicejet operated to 4 major cities i.e. Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru & Chennai.
UDAN-3 changed the history of Belagavi Airport. 13 city connections awarded to 5 major Airlines under UDAN-3.
From 1st May-2019 to till date, there is 13 cities direct flights (Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Kadappa, Mysuru, Indore, Ahmedabad, Surat, Tirupati, Jodhpur, Nasik & Surat) by 5 Airlines i.e. M/s. Alliance Air, Spicejet, Star Air, Indigo & Trujet and Jaipur & Nagpur yet to be connected by M/s. Star Air Airline.
Night parking permission granted for two (02) no’s of Aircrafts EMB-145 of M/s. Star Air (Ghodawat Group).
Facts about the Airport:
The New Terminal Building inaugurated in 14.09.2017 by then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramaiah. The architecture of Terminal Building is quite pleasing and surrounding by beautiful gardens at city side & air side.
The New Terminal Building and extended RWY were commissioned on 16.10.2017. Airport is 15.00 km away from the main city and situated besides the State Highway-20.
