Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar

The Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar is a Greenfield Airport which is located 25 Kms from the state capital Itanagar. Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar', which reflects the people's reverence of the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo), and symbolises the rich cultural heritage of the State. The airport is directly approachable by NH-415 connecting a four lane road to the state capital Itanagar. The new airport has been developed at a cost of INR 645 Crs.

Infrastructure

The Passenger Terminal has been built in an area approx. 3500 sqm with modular design for handling 300 passengers during peak hours with a 2300m long runway.

The building has been provisioned with essential amenities for passengers, airlines such as

  • Conveyer belts
  • Car parking
  • F&B outlets with fully air-conditioned building
  • CCTV and Public Address and Voice Alarm system
  • Space for storage of baggage trolleys
  • Accessible toilets and other facilities for passengers including Divyangjans (specially abled people)
  • Adequate number of Passenger guidance signage’s
  • Fire Fighting/ alarm system
  • Adequate lighting inside and kerb side of the Terminal Building with LED lights.

Car parking for 100 cars along with public amenities is located at city side of terminal building. This airport provides an air-link in the state capital that would lead to greater connectivity and ease of accessibility. It will also stimulates many economic activities in the region and accelerate economic development by encouraging international commerce trade and tourism.

Donyi Polo airport will be first of its kind in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, the largest state of North East India, in terms of capacity and facilities. It full fills the long awaited aspiration of people of Arunachal Pradesh to get the capital city connected by air to other cities of the country. It will act as a primary gateway to the state of Arunachal Pradesh.   The Greenfield airport will also be the first airport to accommodate A-320/ B-737 types of aircraft in Arunachal Pradesh which have carrying capacity of handling about 180 passengers. It will cater to the needs of State capital Itanagar, bordering areas of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as a whole, considering the trade, tourism potential and better connectivity.  It is strategically important and will boost economic development of the region and in case of any natural calamities, it will be of great help in providing relief in affected areas much faster. It is equipped with Instrument Landing System (ILS), night landing facilities to operate in low visibility with CAT-I system is also made available. Met observation centre is also there to assist flight operations. Aerodrome license for day IFR operation has also been issued by the DGCA.

Initiatives

Good nos. of measures have been taken to make a new terminal building an energy efficient building LED lights at all places use of energy efficient motor/drives for AHUs, AC compressor, conveyors, pumps etc. Sewage treatment plant which will allow use of treated water for horticulture. Apart from preventing pollution of water bodies. The building`s envelope is influenced by the surrounding landscapes and it has insulated roofing glass façade and wall panels to reduce power consumption. It has balanced proportion of glazed and panelled walls to optimize power consumption. The building interior is designed to emanate a sense of calm to the passengers by providing free-flowing spaces, hidden service core and a glass façade that links the eye to the panoramic scenic beauty of the Himalayan Foothills. Initially a Solar Power plant of 125KWp was planned to generate clean energy for the airport and reduce carbon footprint. The building will be comply with GRIHA-IV norms, which itself is a certificate of energy efficient building.
