Dandiya raas is originally performed in honour of Goddess Durga. The dance form represents a battle between the demon Mahishasura and the goddess Durga. It is believed to be the demonstration of the fight between Goddess Durga – Power of Sakthi and Mahishasur- the Demon king. The colourful sticks used to perform dandiya represents the sword of Goddess Durga. A nine day festival of power and light welcomes the arrival of Goddess Durga on earth.
Another legend states that the dance form originated from Krishna and Radha’s ‘Raas leela’. Hence the name ‘Dandiya Raas’.
