1. TRAFFIC SUMMARY:

During the year 2004-05, all operational Airports taken together handled 7.18 lakh Aircraft Movements (excludes defence and other non-commercial movements), 59.28 million Passengers and 1280.27 thousand tones of Freight . The details are given in table 1.1.

Above table reveals that  Total Aircraft Movements, Passengers and Freight traffic have increased significantly by 11.9 per cent, 21.5 per cent and 19.8 per cent respectively  during 2004-05 over traffic handled during 2003-04. 

 
3. Aircraft Movement Traffic

During the year 2004-05, 7.18 lakh  Aircraft Movements were handled at all the Indian Airports as against 6.41 lakh movements handled during 2003-04 registering an increase of 11.9 percent. 

The International Aircraft Movements has shown an increase of 19.9 per cent during  2004-05 over 2003-04.  An increase in International Aircraft Movement is due to increase in the frequencies of few International Airlines and  4 new International Airlines(Alitalia(Passengers), Ethiad Airways, Cosmic Air, Air Astana) started operations  at IGI Airport, two new International Airlines (Malaysian Airlines and GMG Airlines) at Kolkata Airport. 

Domestic Aircraft Movements registered a growth of 9.7 percent, during  2004-05 as compared to 2003-04.  An increase in Domestic Aircraft Movements is due to operation of no frill airline (Air Deccan) in All Regions. 

 
4. Passengers Traffic

Total Passengers traffic at all Indian Airports taken together, touched to 59 million during 2004-05 as against  49 million handled during  2003-04 has registered record growth of 21.5 percent..  An increase in Passengers traffic is due to spate of discount in air fare, liberal bilateral aviation agreement between India and Other Countries,  increasing disposable incomes and softened dollar. 

International Passengers have registered a growth of 16.7 percent at all Airports taken together during the period under review.  

Domestic Passengers handled at all Airports registered a growth of 24.0 per cent  during 2004-05 over 2003-04.  

 
5. Freight Traffic

Total Freight handled during 2004-05 was 12.80 lakh tonnes as against 10.69 lakh tonnes handled during 2003-04 registering a  growth of 19.8 percent. 

International Freight  witnessed a growth of 18.8 percent, during 2004-05 over 2003-04.   

Domestic Freight  handled at all Indian Airports registered a growth of 21.6 percent during the year 2004-05 over 2003-04. 

 
6. National Economy and Traffic Trends

The year 2004-05 witnessed a growth of 6.9 percent in GDP as against 8.5 percent during 2003-04.  Index of Industrial Production registered a growth of 8.2 percent during 2004-05 as against 7.0 percent in 2003-04. While the total Aircraft Movement during 2004-05 registered a growth of 11.9 per cent as against 14.4% in 2003-04, total Passengers Movement has recorded an increase of 21.5 percent during 2004-05 as against increase  of 11.6 percent during 2003-04. Total Freight  Movement recorded an increase of 19.8 per cent during 2004-05 as against  an increase of  9.1per cent  during 2003-04.
