Frangible Light Masts for Approach Lighting installed at Ahmedabad Airport

As per the latest ICAO guidelines the elevated approach lights and their supporting structures/poles shall be frangible. The frangibility requirement is applicable for new installations and for the existing installations the date of applicability is January, 2005. After the extension of runway at Ahmedabad airport CAT-1 approach lighting system was to be provided. Due to the presence of road & water works in the area of approach lighting system the height of the poles for installing approach lights varied from 0.235mt to 8.18mt.

The CAT-1 approach lighting system meeting the latest ICAO recommendation has been installed and in operation at Ahmedabad airport from 27.7.2001. This is the first installation of its kind with frangible masts in India.
